Meeting and Needing the Greatest Hearing Aid
There certainly are many voices these days out there shouting, debating or giving their opinions. They heard something from someone or something and now they are speaking it. There's a lesson in this. We tend to hear first and speak second. We broadcast what we receive. If that is the case, we had better be hearing correctly to speak correctly. Hearing, speaking and doing the right stuff is what makes stuff right. Let me illustrate.
For many years an elderly gentleman had been dealing with serious hearing problems. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted with a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear perfectly.
One month later the gentleman went back to the doctor for a checkup.
The doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to their conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
Hearing perfectly changed his perspective and revealed realities that had been hidden due to deafness. Now he could make better decisions because of better auditory input.
There was a fellow in the Bible that had the same problem.
Evidentially, at one time this man could hear and speak well but lost his ability to hear. When he lost his ability to hear he began to speak with difficulty. His friends liked him but they just couldn't understand him. It was awkward. So, they got help. They found a hearing aid. They brought him to Jesus.
Jesus did three things for the man. He took him away from the multitudes that were shouting one thing or another. Secondly, He put His finger in the man's ear and then, after He put His finger into the man's ears, Jesus touched the man's tongue. Thirdly, Jesus looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh, said to the man, "Be open!" What happened next? The Bible says, "And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly." (Mark 7:35)
Sometimes in order to hear well, you have to get away from the screaming multitudes. They may be well intentioned, but have lost their figurative hearing and now speaking with difficulty. Sometimes even churched people who once heard God with clarity, spoke with authority, and lived authentically, somehow lose their ability to hear from God and then speak with difficulty.
If that can happen to church people, it can and does happen in all other sectors of society too with dramatic and catastrophic results.
Notice that Jesus touched the person's ear with His finger first, then he touched the person's tongue. We hear first, speak second. God wants to give us a filter through which we can recognize wisdom and folly. God speaks wisdom to mankind so that God can speak wisdom through mankind. That's what sets people free for responsible and productive living.
Now, please be open to this. How does good hearing start? With a good hearing aid! May I suggest getting away from the multitude of voices, get alone with God and start with reading the Bible. Warning: You may need to change your 'mental' will.
