Norway's Horrem/Hordvik and Skarlund/Spinnangr celebrate on the podium of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup semifinal tournament in Zug, Switzerland Zug, Switzerland, May 19, 2012 - Norway eventually claimed the top of the podium in Zug as the semifinal stage of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup ended there with the guys from Scandinavia edging the home heroes of Switzerland with the score of 3:1. While the guests evidently celebrated their success, still the Swiss pairs were happy for having also made it to the final stage of the competition which is coming up in mid June in Alanya, Turkey, and where a spot for the 2012 Olympics in London will be at stake. Switzerland is indeed positioned extremely high in the CEV Country Ranking and hence taking the last spot available to compete in the finals.

Everything started well on Saturday for Norway as Tariej Skarlund and Martin Spinnangr downed Switzerland’s top pair, Patrick Heuscher and Jefferson Bellaguarda, in straight sets (21-16, 21-14). Sascha Heyer and Sébastien Chevallier fought for almost one hour with Iver Andreas Horrem and Oivind Hordvik and they even resisted to a match ball for their opponents before sealing that game 17-15 at the tie-break and contribute what would have remained Switzerland’s only win in this final.

Horrem/Hordvik got their revenge in the afternoon as they battled once again for more than one hour with Heuscher/Bellaguarda but this time they got the upper hand (23-21, 17-21, and 15-11); the home guys performed much better than in their opening game of the day and they eventually lost a very close first set on a terrific block of Oivind Hordvik. After storming back in set 2, Heuscher and Bellaguarda could not keep up that rhythm in the tie-break with Norway going up 2:1 in the provisional count.

As the home side stood with its back against the wall, Skarlund and Spinnangr were just not to stop with Heyer/Chevallier surrendering after two one-sided sets (21-18, 21-15).

The Norwegians were evidently delighted with the result. “It is a great satisfaction and we played much better than we did in the last weeks. It is just fantastic that we will have this chance to qualify for the Olympics there in Turkey” said Skarlund. “It was a real team effort. We like playing for our national team and our country; we just love the formula of the Continental Cup. We shall do this more often” added a smiling Martin “Spinny” Spinnangr.

The Swiss guys were also not too disappointed as they will also join the starting field of the final in Alanya. “Mission accomplished” stated Patrick Heuscher. “And I really enjoyed playing before my own fans” he stated.
